about
Producer/engineer Arrom returns with a new direction on her new single Can’t Ask This, the lead track from her upcoming LP, Selene.
Her new techno direction arose out of a liberating change to her creative workflow - as she explains: “I usually write lyrics and melody first, however that didn’t happen in Can’t Ask This. I had just started a new session in Logic and was directionless-ly playing around with the Alchemy sample manipulation synth. That’s how I came up with the industrial soundscape that sits behind the beats… I went into the track knowing I wanted to make it pretty huge. I didn’t necessarily have any other concept in mind other that ‘make a track that you want to bop to.’”
The freedom of this approach allowed Arrom to draw on a wide and diverse range of creative wellsprings to achieve her aim for the track. While her previous work (including debut full-length, Take My Lymph’s, and follow-up minimalist EP, But Still We) hark back to the art-pop tradition carrying from the likes of Bjork through to FKA Twigs, Can’t Ask This see’s Arrom embracing the influence of other musical heroes such as Burial and Andy Stott, but also from her peers. She notes:
“The final beat elements were realised together with a couple of friends of mine in a modular jam session. We were just playing around with different ideas, and I ended up piecing together that main driving beat from a few different and unrelated beat trial.”
The result is a sparkling techno cut, alive with mystery and energy, and a potent representation of Arrom's masterful sound design.
